When it comes to learning how to play the game, Space Rangers 2's learning curve is practically nonexistent. The majority of the player's actions, from outfitting spaceships to trading various commodities to talking with planetary governments about special missions are all controlled using one- or two-click mouse commands. The game has no complicated control panels or arcane command strings to learn. More than this, though, the entire game is controlled using one of the most elegant control systems I've ever seen. Travel orders, on the other hand, automatically string turns together so seamlessly that they make it seem as if the game is running in real-time, but automatically stops whenever something interesting happens. Combat actions, for example, can be controlled to a remarkably fine degree, with commands available that allow the player to target multiple enemies using different weapons, control various ship systems, pick up valuable space debris, and give orders to subordinate vessels. Player travel, communication, ship-to-ship trading, and combat all happen here and are conducted using a simple "continuous turn-based" approach that allows players as much (or as little) control over the action as they need. This section of the game takes place on a simplified 2D map of the universe. The game never tells the player what to do. The player may completely ignore the war and become the richest trader in the universe, or turn pirate and became the greatest menace to the space lanes. Space Rangers 2 is completely open-ended. As one of the Space Ranger elite, the player is called on to liberate the universe from the tyranny of the Dominators, eventually tracking them back to their central control center and destroying them for all time or not. The Space Rangers universe is under attack by the Dominators, ruthless AI-controlled war machines out to exterminate all organic life in the universe. Here's the thing, though: Once I actually got them to sit down and play the game, their giggling changed to gasps of awe as they got sucked into one of the most elegantly designed and compulsively enjoyable games released in recent memory.Īt its heart, Space Rangers 2 is a simplified space trading/combat simulation that places the player at the controls of a one-man spaceship and sets him or her loose on a randomly generated universe of over 100 different star systems controlled by five different races.

It's a silly title for the sequel to a game that not many people have heard of. It was the same reaction I got from people in the office who asked what that silly-looking brightly colored space game on my monitor was, I had to answer " Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators" and listen to them giggle. When I first heard rumblings from the gaming underground about a 2002 European game called Space Rangers that was never released in the States, my reaction illustrated the greatest hurdle the game has to overcome - tittering at the cheesiness of the name.
